What is Carafate?

Generic Carafate is an anti ulcer medicine. It contains the active ingredient sucralfate. It is used specifically to treat duodenal ulcers, which are formed in the first part of the small intestine. Carafate also helps prevent ulcers from recurring after the initial ulcer is healed.

Ulcers are formed when the protective lining of the stomach is destroyed. Sores or lesions form on the lining and can led to indigestion and acidity. Ulcers in the stomach are called gastric ulcers and those on in the duodenum are called duodenal ulcers. Both are types of peptic ulcers.
