Generic Carafate is prescribed by the doctor to cure peptic ulcers. The medicine is also used to treat patients suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease. Such patients get ulcers in the esophagus and are prone to frequent vomiting and nausea. This happens because stomach acids wash back into the esophagus.
Generic Carafate comes in the form of pills or oral suspension. It is taken four times a day for treating ulcers and twice a day to prevent them. Since it works by forming a protective coating, it should be taken at least an hour before meals. It is best taken on an empty stomach.
Keep taking Generic Carafate for the full duration of the course. Do not discontinue using it if you start feeling better. The exact dosage and the length of treatment will be determined by your doctor depending on the severity of your condition. In case you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is already time for the next dose then do not double dose. Simply skip that dose and continue as usual.
Remember that both tablets and oral suspension are used to treat ulcers. However, if you intend to take the medicine to prevent the ulcer from coming back once it has been healed then you will have to take the tablets. It is the only form approved for maintenance.
